Snowboard Lesson: The 3 Main Types Of Riding Styles

You can learn how to snowboard online staying safe during the Covid-19 pandemic. This snowboard tutorial will go over 3 Main Types Of Snowboarding. Knowing what type of snowboarder you are will help you to get the right gear, the right terrain and the right area. Other Snowboard Videos on YouTube & Flowing Freeride teach how to pick the right snowboard gear best for you and drills to improve your skills. You’ll have access to all our snowboard tutorials when you sign up that cover every step and feedback from your coach. We also have some free snowboard videos to prepare for snowboard safety on our YouTube Page. I recommend watching these snowboard videos;  Building Rhythm, Advanced Snowboarding Getting Air, Superman Eruo Carves, Snowboard Dynamic Flex & Extend, Advance Snowboard Lesson: Dropping Cliffs, Snowboarding Off Piste, Snowboarding Chutes, Snowboard Lesson Navigating Trees & Obstacles, Active Passive Absorption, Eruo Surfer Carves, Basics For Freestyle Features, Advance Snowboard Carving: Surfer Turns & Grab Carves, Snowboard Responsibility Code #1, Snowboard Responsibility Code #2, Snowboard Responsibility Code #3, Responsibility Code #4 Look Uphill, Snowboard Responsibility Code # 5, #6 Obey All Signs, Snowboard Responsibility Code #7,Funnel Turns For Navigating Obstacles & Snowboarding Moguls.

Think about what I mean by finding the right gear. If you’re into tricks and jumps then you want a softer flex board that is a little shorter because your style is Freestyle. Softer flex in boots allows you to flex and extend to give you more power for tricks. It’s a twin tip or that it’s meant to be able to go goofy or regular with the same performances. Your camber preference will probably be reversed or hybrid with detuned edges. These board features will be more forgiving. You’ll be able to spin faster with a shorter board. Softer flex will give you more bend to absorb landings. It’s less likely to catch edges with that camber shape and the board likes to butter. Dull edges don’t hook up on rails and boxes.

Finding the right terrain helps with your style. If you like to carve, turn and go fast then you might get an alpine setup. Alpine setups have sharp angles both towards the nose or front of the snowboard. The snowboard is directional or meant to be ridden one way. Your boots are hard like a skier making it harder to walk around. One main reason I liked snowboarding over skiing was the soft boot. Alpine boards are longer, stiffer and narrow. This allows them to go from edge to edge quickly. Terrain that is wide open, groomed and a bit steeper is perfect if you’re and Alpine rider.

Some resorts are known for their parks and pipes. Some are known for their epic race course and others are known for they’re deep powder. Freeride style is where I came up with the name Flowing Freeride. The Freeride snowboard style is a combination of Freestyle and Alpine snowboarding. You ride everything. You might lean more towards freestyle and have a twin tip board. The side cut starts going back up in the center of the board and the flex is the same. If you ride a lot of powder your stance will be set back so you have a longer nose than tail. The flex is softer at the nose and stiffer at the tail so you float on the pow better. It might be asymmetrical. The board might be wider for more surface area that will also help you float in the powder. I like resorts in Utah, Colorado, California, Wyoming and Montana because they’re Big Mountains with steep terrain and Deep Powder!

The 3 main types of snowboarding are Alpine, Freestyle and Freeride. Depending on what you like will help you get the right equipment. It will help you decide what conditions and trails to ride. You will know what resorts you like to ride. A perfect fit will be like a fairytale with a happy ending! Advanced Snowboarding GET AIR…Land Big Jumps!

Hell yes let’s get some Big Air! Snowboarding has pushed the boundaries for getting huge amounts of hang time. These snowboard events have become part of the Winter Olympics and skiers have transitioned their competitions. These are some snowboard tips to keep you safe while catching some jumbo style points. Other Snowboard Videos on YouTube & Flowing Freeride teach how to improve your snowboarding skills. You’ll have access to all our snowboard tutorials when you sign up that cover every step and feedback from your coach. We also have some free snowboard videos to prepare for snowboard safety on our YouTube Page. I recommend watching these snowboard videos;  Building Rhythm, Superman Eruo Carves, Snowboard Dynamic Flex & Extend, Advance Snowboard Lesson: Dropping Cliffs, Snowboarding Off Piste, Snowboarding Chutes, Snowboard Lesson Navigating Trees & Obstacles, Active Passive Absorption, Eruo Surfer Carves, Basics For Freestyle Features, Advance Snowboard Carving: Surfer Turns & Grab Carves, Snowboard Responsibility Code #1, Snowboard Responsibility Code #2, Snowboard Responsibility Code #3, Responsibility Code #4 Look Uphill, Snowboard Responsibility Code # 5, #6 Obey All Signs, Snowboard Responsibility Code #7,Funnel Turns For Navigating Obstacles & Snowboarding Moguls.

The key to getting big air is confidence. You need speed and lots of it. It’s not always that easy. If you skateboarded, surfed, longboarded or wakeboarded then you might be able to get comfortable snowboarding quickly. You have the skills to go fast and feel comfort. Olympic athletes practice during the Summer in Park City, Utah by jumping into pools that have air bubbles. These bubbles make the water softer to land. Not everyone is at that level but you can take steps towards getting good balance on your snowboard. I’ll give some snowboard tips to help you get comfortable with speed and then air.

Keep your speed by being stacked over your snowboard and aligned. A good snowboard video to watch is Body Alignment and being comfortable in steep terrain. It will help you get you up to speed. Think about what will give you more speed. Steeper terrain and Waxing Your Snowboard will give you more velocity. Practice these body movements I’ve talked about and move into the park. You have your steep drop in and then your ramp that goes back up to kick you into the air. When I’m coaching high level students we get into bigger parks with huge features. We build up our skills in the smaller parks and use natural terrain features. You want to keep your speed on the approach so there’s enough momentum to shoot you off the ramp. Most folks miscalculate the speed and get stuck going back up. Go fast to go big!

You’ve got your speed down now and we’re going to start getting unweighted. This is about getting air safely. If you look at the shape of your jump you can skip the ramp and just hit the roller. Jump a wee bit before the apex pulling your legs upwards. This creates the feeling of being in the air but allows you to extend them back to the snow if you feel uncomfortable without a huge impact. If you just launch yourself off a kicker you could really get hurt or broken. Build up to this skill level and once you get a few feet of air off the side roller then hit the ramp. Go faster than you think. Most people underestimate their momentum and knuckle the landing. The landings are usually long allowing you to cushion if you carry more speed. Watch others or guinea pigs go off the features so you know how much speed to carry.  Always scout the park before attempting so you see how big the ramps, features and landings are.

Go fast without turning for at least 10 to 30 feet going up the ramp. Bend your knees, hips and ankles to get ready to absorb. When you reach the end of the ramp stay low and pop giving you more air. Pull your legs up. If you don’t you might flap your arms around or “rolling down the windows.” Think of an airplane pulling it’s landing gear up. If you can grab your snowboard it will make you solid and balanced in the air. You can start performing tricks like grabs, spins or inverts once you feel comfortable. When you land, extend your legs down and keep your board flat. This is called “stomping your landing” because your board smacks down on the landing ramp.

I like to practice Flat Board Drills outside of the park to gain confidence. Create rhythm by Buttering and doing freestyle in flat terrain. It’s fun to have these skills in your bag of tricks and to use them whenever the opportunity presents itself. Snowboard Avalanche Resources

This online snowboard lesson will give Safety Tips For Snowboarding Avalanche Conditions. There is nothing better when snowboard conditions are full of deep powder. These conditions provide soft fluffy SuperHero Snow. These conditions make for epic days but all that snow can cause avalanches. I’ll give you some snowboard tips to help you scope out sketchy terrain. Other Snowboard Videos on YouTube & Flowing Freeride teach how to pick the right snowboard gear best for you and drills to improve your skills. It’s September 8, 2020 and I woke up to cold weather and snow covered mountain tops today. This is the first snow of the 2020-21 snowboard season! It’s time to get you boards out and start to tune and wax them. Winter will be here soon. If you’re like me you’ll be wanting to get as soon as there’s enough snow accumulation to ride. I know it’s tempting to go out in the backcountry to get those early freshies. Be cautious because we had several early slides last season that took a few snowboarder’s lives. You need to have some basic skills on how to survey mountain avalanche terrain. Watch this snowboard video 30º Slopes In Backcountry.

Slides occur when there is a layer of Faceted Snow or a weak layer of snow. There is a science to this. If the snow melts or heats up then cools down and freezes it creates a layer of snow that when new snow packs up that layer can fail and slide. There have been many winter sports Olympic athletes that have been caught in avalanches and been killed. A lot of people just don’t know the dangers of being in the backcountry. There is avalanche equipment like airbags, beacons, probes, shovels, snow saws and ropes that can help save lives when used correctly.

Avalanche awareness is a backcountry essential skill. If I’m traveling somewhere in the snowboard season, I really watch their avalanche reports. This lets me know what the layers are underneath when I get there. Here in the United States we have the Avalanche Center and the National Forest Service that provide avalanche reports that are posted for those areas. It’s a good idea to take a look at those reports especially if you’re going to be traveling to that area. Watch in advance so that you know what the layers are and when you arrive there. I like to build a snow pit and do tests on the layers of snow. It’s a good idea to take an avalanche course. That gives you the knowledge of what snow layers are like.

If you’re out there and you dig a pit you see a layer of snow at the very bottom, that’s icy the layers on top are probably going to slide. If you’re out in the snow covered mountain and you see failures on the slopes or cracks that means they’re about ready to slide. Stay away from those slopes. It’s a really good idea to actually pay attention to these avalanche reports and the weather reports so that you know what kind of conditions they’re going to be when you get to that resort.

The biggest Red Flag of Avalanches is seeing other avalanches. Snowboard Tips For A Lone Wolf

This online snowboard lesson will give safety Snowboarding Tips For A Lone Wolf. Snowboarding is a sport that you can do solo. Nothing is wrong going out on the mountain by yourself. There’s a saying for a lot of snowboarders, “no friends on a powder day.” When there’s a fresh storm everybody calls in sick and hits the slopes as soon as they open. Common excuses are the white flu or the powder bug and bosses expect employees to hit the slopes for a couple hours in the morning. The first few runs the snow is untouched and those runs are something you’ll never forget. The snow gets tracked out and lots of snowboarders are done by noon. Those days are epic and worth taking a sick day. You may not tell your boss where you are but let somebody know if you’re going up as a lone wolf.

Keep your phone charged and stay inbounds if you’re going at it by yourself. You’ll need a way to call for help if something God forbid, goes wrong. Sometimes you might be with someone but they’re slow so you can get 2 runs in the time it takes them to do one. A lot of powder can make it difficult for lower level riders so think about that if you’re taking someone at a lower level. If you’ve ever experienced a powder day you probably have been hooked on snowboarding because of that day.

Stay safe out there and have the right gear to make you experience one to last a lifetime. If you’re not at that level signup for a lesson with me and use my online school to get you to Ride Right™! Preparation Routines For The Snowboard Season

Some of the best prep routines to prepare for the snowboard season are doing things that keep your body in shape. That means going to the gym, working out, eating right and getting enough sleep. I like to work out doing at least 30 minutes of cardio and then 30 minutes of weight training. I’ve found this makes me feel the best and prepares me to be strong and healthy for the snowboard season. Working out is great but you want to eat well too. I like to take vitamin C and fish oil. Fish oil lubricates my joints and makes me able to move more fluidly because of that oil and it’s good for you. If you’re not sure what vitamins or supplements you like try taking them the night before and if you wake up feeling good then use it. If you wake up feeling hungover or groggy then it’s not for you. You’ll want to burn as many or more calories that  you intake. Staying fit will keep you moving well.

I drink lots of water so that I stay hydrated and it keeps my joints and muscles healthy. If you don’t drink enough water your muscles can cramp and cause injury. You want to Stay Snowboard Fit To Prevent Injuries. When you’re snowboarding up in the mountains you need to drink lots of water and it helps with elevation sickness. Eat healthy, choosing foods that don’t have tons of saturated fat or high fructose corn syrup. Most places I’ve lived outside of the US do not put corn syrup into their Foods because it’s bad for you and their governments pay for their health care so they want their citizens to be healthy. Try to avoid corn syrup and other additives that are put in foods in the US. Eating foods that are made fresh with fresh ingredients is a big plus.

Sleep is so important you want to get at least seven and a half hours per night. The older you get the more rest you need. Getting enough sleep will allow your body to repair and your mind to rest as well. You would think that sleeping is easy but a lot of us are very busy and sometimes it’s hard to get that much sleep. When you have enough time to sleep your body heals, you’re rested and it causes less stress. Sleeping will be very beneficial in multiple ways but the biggest is it creates a stress free environment. Your body and mind will be able to function at the highest ability level and you’ll feel great. Get your sleep to fill the best.

Take care of your equipment by Waxing Your Snowboard and keeping the edges sharp. I will sharpen my edges first and then clean off the metal. You don’t want little pieces of metal getting into your wax so sharpen first, clean it off and then wax. I will wax my snowboard at the beginning of the day. That way the snowboard has dried, is warm not cold and it’s a better result. Repair Your Snowboard When You Hit Rocks & Get Core Shots. This will keep water from getting into your core and ruining your snowboard. At the end of your snowboard day dry your boots, gloves and other clothing to eliminate bacteria and mildew. I shower at the end of the day too to get rid of sweat from a hard day of ripping.

I like to wake up earlier in the morning because if you’re just moping around or sleeping too much you can get depressed so try to stay active. It’s good to have a good routine of getting up earlier and going to bed earlier that gives you more time in the day to do things. Sunlight can affect how you feel so if you can be out during the morning and in the sunlight it will make your body feel better because you’re getting more vitamin D. It gives you more time to do things during the day. You’ll have more energy. You’ll be able to go to the gym, outdoors, hiking, biking, fishing or do any other outdoor recreation.

There’s been a lot of snow in early-season the last two seasons and I’ve been able to hike in October. Take Your Rock Board Out In Roctober. The best way to get into snowboard shape is to snowboard. No matter how much working out you do at the gym, mountain biking, street biking, running or hiking does not compare to just actually snowboarding. As soon as there is enough snow in the mountains start hiking and getting on your board. When my joints and muscles are sore I like to sit in the hot tub or steam room to help repair and to take care of my body.

Eat right, take healthy supplements, get enough sleep, eliminate stress out of your life, workout and keep a balance between work and family life. Drink plenty of water, stay healthy, it will keep you younger, and it will keep you moving. You don’t want to stagnate and not move that’s when you get a lot more injuries. If you have a desk job make sure that you get up, walk around, move and let the blood flow. They say that a huge health problem is that people sit at their desks and don’t walk around. The new cancer is the desk job where you don’t do anything but sit at your desk. You need to get up periodically and move around so the blood flows through your body and to your brain. These are some simple prep routines that you can take to help you become a healthier better snowboarder.  The article is published sportsmd.com.

It’s important to be safe out on the mountain. Review this Playlist On The Snowboard Responsibility Code to educate yourself on mountain etiquette and to know what everyone else on the slopes knows to keep you riding all season long. The 2019-20 season has kicked off with a bang and we got over feet of new snow from this last storm over the Thanksgiving holiday here in Park City, Utah. We are supposed to get another wave of storms over the next few days. Keep your fingers crossed. This is the second season in a row that I was able to hike Alta in October. I’m very dankful wink for all the snow we’ve been getting. I do hope that your winter is going well wherever you’re at.

To make big snow walls and to spray the snow you’ll want to carry a wee bit of speed and then really dig into the snow by getting your edge angle up pretty high. To make it consistent like Grunta is doing think about being really fore at the beginning of your turns and then aft at the end. I was making grab carves and getting into freestyle a bit more. I was putting my hands down on the snow. It’s fun to do tripods putting both hands on the snow and then buttering. You can do this by reaching over your tail or nose and lifting up your opposite leg. This video is more to highlight our riding but it you want to learn more about how to do these moves watch Basic Buttering & Surfer Turns Grab Carves.

Watching other people ride can really help you to improve because almost 95% of us are visual learners. If you can ride with others and pull out your phone to get some video of you while you ride will help you improve very dramatically. You can send in your video to Flowing Freeride and we can do movement analysis for you. I’ll edit it and send it back so you’ll know exactly when and where you can improve.

The season is going strong so get your equipment ready to RIP it mates! I created Flowing Freeride to give peeps an affordable way to learn snowboarding. I even have one snowboard video that tells you How To Snowboard For Free. I want people to be able to snowboard in the future and shred the deep powder. Join the fight on climate and do your part. Learn Snowboard Buttering Basics & Snowboard Tricks

This snowboard tutorial will go over Basic Buttering Techniques. Buttering is a cool trick to be able to do on your snowboard. It’s when you start balancing on just your nose or tail of you board. Think about applying butter on a piece of bread and that’s where the term buttering comes from. It’s easier to butter on snowboards that are softer in their flex pattern. Reverse camber or banana boards are built to butter. You will loose other efficiencies but it that’s your style go for it. Other Snowboard Videos on YouTube & Flowing Freeride go over proper ½ pipe, jumps, freestyle and riding the park techniques. You’ll have access to all our snowboard tutorials when you signup that cover every step and feedback from your coach. We also have some free snowboard videos to prepare for snowboard safety on our YouTube Page. I recommend watching these snowboard videos; Building RhythmAdvanced Snowboarding Getting AirSuperman Eruo Carves, Snowboard Dynamic Flex & Extend, Advance Snowboard Lesson: Dropping Cliffs, Snowboarding Off Piste, Snowboarding Chutes, Snowboard Lesson Navigating Trees & Obstacles, Active Passive AbsorptionEruo Surfer Carves, Basics For Freestyle Features, Advance Snowboard Carving: Surfer Turns & Grab Carves, Funnel Turns For Navigating Obstacles & Snowboarding Moguls.

Find a flat area where your board isn’t moving and draw a line in the snow. Find a flat area where your board isn’t moving and draw a line in the snow. Find a flat area where your board isn’t moving and draw a line in the snow. After you’ve drawn the line in the snow you’re going to try to jump from left foot to right foot landing on that line. Use the board to absorb your landing. Instead of landing flat on your foot land on the nose and tail. Get the board to flex as your landing. This will bend the board and make it easier on your body. Think of jumping on a trampoline. The springs and matt flex and absorb your weight and then pop you back up. When you land flat on your foot your body absorbs the impact. Use your board to create pop and it will be easier on your body allowing you to snowboard longer.

The first thing you want to do is start leaning right and left foot forward making a 90º angle in that leg that you’re putting more weight on. The left leg and then right leg making a 90º angle. Then you’re going to start putting more weight lifting the board off the snow. Then get the nose and tail off the snow a little bit. Then you’re to start doing the drill jumping from left foot to right foot landing on that line. If you can’t see the line well use your glove. That will make a good line so I can see where I’m suppose to land. After you’re able to do that start moving around and lifting up. You’ll start to see that your board will start to spin a little bit. Keep your snowboard flat that’s a big key. Don’t keep it on it’s edge keep in really flat and don’t keep it on it’s edge. Keep your snowboard really flat. We’re going to start buttering on our snowboards.

Buttering is great for freestyle but it can also help you avoid obstacles on the snow like a rock. Lifting your board over an obstacle prevents you from damaging yourself and equipment. See you out on the slopes! You will gain these snowboard talents by training with Flowing Freeride. Learn To Snowboard & Get In Your Flow Zone Like Basketball & Baseball

This snowboard video will help you get More Dynamic in Your Snowboarding. What that means is I want to move a little bit more the whole time I’m riding. I have some drills where I talk about rhythm. Adding to dynamic riding by turning with rhythm. I want to build on that. The whole time I’m riding I’ll have a bit of a beat.

Moving a bit having my knees, hips and ankles soft. That way when I’m out on the snow I can absorb any little variable that comes at you. Sometimes when you’re in a powder field there is a ice chunk or a rock or something else. Something that throws you off balance. If you’re able to absorb that you won’t crash. If you can bounce and be nice and soft in your body you’re able to absorb. We’re going to go out and just move. A good thing to do is to get some type of musicI really love riding to music I love doing a lot of things to music. It helps you just flow. That’s what Flowing Freeride is about, is rhythm and being in that state of flow. I know a lot of people talk about this in psychology. Time slows down, where athletes talk about being in the zone. That guy’s on fire! Basketball for example. These basketball players when they’re in the zone it’s like Stef Curry he shoots a 3 from almost half court because he’s on fire it just goes in. Swish nothing but net. That’s what I’m talking about.

When we’re out here snowboarding I want you to feel that flow and feel that rhythm. I want you brain to almost turn off. You’ve done it so much that you’re in that zone in that state of flow. We’re going out and bouncing to a rhythm. We’re going to get our either speaker or ear buds and listen to music. We’re going to put that into our ear, not both or a speaker. Some people don’t like doing that. I prefer ear buds. Riding to the beat the whole time that’s the drill. Ride to that rhythm and try to get into that state of flow. It’s just reaction. You can do anything. You’re really in rhythmIf you’re practicing at that state you get to be where a lot of these professional athletes are. Doing things so many times they’re in the zone. Baseball athletes are getting a baseball thrown to them at 100 mph and they’re able to hit that. It’s amazing! I’m talking about time kind of slowing down because they’re in that state of flow. This drill we’re going out listening to music as we’re riding bouncing to that beat and rhythm. So we’re in flow. Look at other videos on rhythm by clicking in the right corner. When you’re out riding with music make you sure you have one ear available. Take out one of your ear buds so you don’t have both in and can hear what’s going on around you. You don’t want to be deaf to the environment around here.

There are going to be people that come up on you, 2 inches away from you. I don’t know why they do it but you want to be aware of that. When you are out riding with music take one out to hear with one ear what’s going on around you. See you out on the slopes! You will gain these snowboard talents by training with Flowing Freeride. It’s memorial weekend and there’s tons of snow to spray huge snow walls. Tip, dip and Rip the snow. Many resorts like Abasin, Breck, Mammoth and Snowbird have extended their seasons. It’s an Endless Winter with record snow fall. See you on the slopes mates!

Learn Snowboard Jibbing

This online snowboard lesson will go over Snowboarding Jibbing Tips. When you’re able to flow around the mountain you use everything out there as your playground. When you’re in the park there are man made features and jumps. There are similar features on the mountain that are natural. Train your eye to spot these treasures and jib them. I recommend watching these snowboard videos; Building Rhythm, Advanced Snowboarding Getting Air,Superman Eruo Carves, Snowboard Dynamic Flex & Extend, Advance Snowboard Lesson: Dropping Cliffs, Snowboarding Off Piste, Snowboarding Chutes, Snowboard Lesson Navigating Trees & Obstacles, Active Passive Absorption, Eruo Surfer Carves, Basics For Freestyle Features, Advance Snowboard Carving: Surfer Turns & Grab Carves, Funnel Turns For Navigating Obstacles & Snowboarding Moguls.

When were out riding and we jump up and hit something it’s jibbing. You can use it as a verb to to jump off of something or to jump over an object. The object that you’re jumping over is jibbing it. Now as far as a drill what I like to do for jibbing is to go out and find as many things that I can jib off of, jump over use it as an actual a feature that I’ll jib off of. Maybe it’s a branch or I’ll be going up a quarter pipe and at the top I jump up and maybe twist and tweak my board to hit a branch or something. A lot of parks have a jump setup where there’s maybe a ball or some barrels something where you get the speed off it and then you actually bonk off of it jib off of it.

There are a few different phrases when you hit these objects but a good drill is to go out and find natural features outside the park. Maybe you find a little stick or logs whatever and try to jib off of them different ways. You can jib things with a flat board or your edge. Maybe you’re actually tweaking it and hit it with your board. Maybe you actually are going off a jump and you’re spinning one way and then you hit it and switch yourself back the opposite way. I’ve talked about some features outside of the park but the man-made features you might see a gong, big old bells, mail boxes and cars. You’ll even see urban rails with steps in there. You might see a lot of the metal objects and you’re like Wow! There are boxes and and all types of rails. These are great but I would recommend that you go out and first practice outside the park and as you feel a bit more comfortable gradually progressing in there.

One thing I really like about jibbing is once I get to my apex if there’s something I can jib off of and actually create more bounce. You’ll get a little bit further. It actually looks really cool and it makes you feel good. There are a lot of things you can do. It’s a fun little drill to go out and just jib over anything.
