Preparation Routines For The Snowboard Season

Some of the best prep routines to prepare for the snowboard season are doing things that keep your body in shape. That means going to the gym, working out, eating right and getting enough sleep. I like to work out doing at least 30 minutes of cardio and then 30 minutes of weight training. I’ve found this makes me feel the best and prepares me to be strong and healthy for the snowboard season. Working out is great but you want to eat well too. I like to take vitamin C and fish oil. Fish oil lubricates my joints and makes me able to move more fluidly because of that oil and it’s good for you. If you’re not sure what vitamins or supplements you like try taking them the night before and if you wake up feeling good then use it. If you wake up feeling hungover or groggy then it’s not for you. You’ll want to burn as many or more calories that  you intake. Staying fit will keep you moving well.

I drink lots of water so that I stay hydrated and it keeps my joints and muscles healthy. If you don’t drink enough water your muscles can cramp and cause injury. You want to Stay Snowboard Fit To Prevent Injuries. When you’re snowboarding up in the mountains you need to drink lots of water and it helps with elevation sickness. Eat healthy, choosing foods that don’t have tons of saturated fat or high fructose corn syrup. Most places I’ve lived outside of the US do not put corn syrup into their Foods because it’s bad for you and their governments pay for their health care so they want their citizens to be healthy. Try to avoid corn syrup and other additives that are put in foods in the US. Eating foods that are made fresh with fresh ingredients is a big plus.

Sleep is so important you want to get at least seven and a half hours per night. The older you get the more rest you need. Getting enough sleep will allow your body to repair and your mind to rest as well. You would think that sleeping is easy but a lot of us are very busy and sometimes it’s hard to get that much sleep. When you have enough time to sleep your body heals, you’re rested and it causes less stress. Sleeping will be very beneficial in multiple ways but the biggest is it creates a stress free environment. Your body and mind will be able to function at the highest ability level and you’ll feel great. Get your sleep to fill the best. 

Take care of your equipment by Waxing Your Snowboard and keeping the edges sharp. I will sharpen my edges first and then clean off the metal. You don’t want little pieces of metal getting into your wax so sharpen first, clean it off and then wax. I will wax my snowboard at the beginning of the day. That way the snowboard has dried, is warm not cold and it’s a better result. Repair Your Snowboard When You Hit Rocks & Get Core Shots. This will keep water from getting into your core and ruining your snowboard. At the end of your snowboard day dry your boots, gloves and other clothing to eliminate bacteria and mildew. I shower at the end of the day too to get rid of sweat from a hard day of ripping. 

I like to wake up earlier in the morning because if you’re just moping around or sleeping too much you can get depressed so try to stay active. It’s good to have a good routine of getting up earlier and going to bed earlier that gives you more time in the day to do things. Sunlight can affect how you feel so if you can be out during the morning and in the sunlight it will make your body feel better because you’re getting more vitamin D. It gives you more time to do things during the day. You’ll have more energy. You’ll be able to go to the gym, outdoors, hiking, biking, fishing or do any other outdoor recreation.

There’s been a lot of snow in early-season the last two seasons and I’ve been able to hike in October. Take Your Rock Board Out In Roctober. The best way to get into snowboard shape is to snowboard. No matter how much working out you do at the gym, mountain biking, street biking, running or hiking does not compare to just actually snowboarding. As soon as there is enough snow in the mountains start hiking and getting on your board. When my joints and muscles are sore I like to sit in the hot tub or steam room to help repair and to take care of my body.

Eat right, take healthy supplements, get enough sleep, eliminate stress out of your life, workout and keep a balance between work and family life. Drink plenty of water, stay healthy, it will keep you younger, and it will keep you moving. You don’t want to stagnate and not move that’s when you get a lot more injuries. If you have a desk job make sure that you get up, walk around, move and let the blood flow. They say that a huge health problem is that people sit at their desks and don’t walk around. The new cancer is the desk job where you don’t do anything but sit at your desk. You need to get up periodically and move around so the blood flows through your body and to your brain. Simply have someone video you doing a specific trick, riding any terrain or of you just riding and we’ll give you movement analysis or MA or your riding. It’s important to be safe out on the mountain. Review this Playlist On The Snowboard Responsibility Code to educate yourself on mountain etiquette and to know what everyone else on the slopes knows to keep you riding all season long. The 2019-20 season has kicked off with a bang and we got over feet of new snow from this last storm over the Thanksgiving holiday here in Park City, Utah. We are supposed to get another wave of storms over the next few days. Keep your fingers crossed. This is the second season in a row that I was able to hike Alta in October. I’m very dankful wink for all the snow we’ve been getting. I do hope that your winter is going well wherever you’re at.

To make big snow walls and to spray the snow you’ll want to carry a wee bit of speed and then really dig into the snow by getting your edge angle up pretty high. To make it consistent like Grunta is doing think about being really fore at the beginning of your turns and then aft at the end. I was making grab carves and getting into freestyle a bit more. I was putting my hands down on the snow. It’s fun to do tripods putting both hands on the snow and then buttering. You can do this by reaching over your tail or nose and lifting up your opposite leg. Watching other people ride can really help you to improve because almost 95% of us are visual learners. If you can ride with others and pull out your phone to get some video of you while you ride will help you improve very dramatically. You can send in your video to Flowing Freeride and we can do movement analysis for you. I’ll edit it and send it back so you’ll know exactly when and where you can improve.

How To Make The Mountain Better & Our Climate

This online snowboard lesson will go over How To Make The Mountain Better. There are a lot of things you can do to keep winter clean. In mountain cities there are mountains and valleys. This can cause an inversion where the cool air gets trapped in the valleys. It’s warmer in the mountains because the cold is trapped along with all the pollution and temperatures are opposite or inverted. The only way to clear it out is to have a storm system come through. During these inversions try to drive less or carpool. Some cities have no burn days or even months. I had a great 2018-19 season getting on snow for teaching, filming, coaching, training or hiking 204 days! That was a record for me. I’ve been able to hike up at Alta, Utah several days this 2019-20 already. It’s good to get snow in October and for the weather to stay cool up in the mountains. I wanted to do something to give back to the mountains. I saw a lot of garbage when I was hiking up on June 21, 2019 the Summer Solstice. The snow had melted and all the rubbish folks had tossed was very visible. I decide to make a quick snowboard tutorial on making the mountain better than when arriving. I picked up all the trash on my ride down and recycled it down in the recycle bins at the bottom. I did sacrifice on having a line with rhythm but making things better takes work and sacrifice. Almost everything I found was recyclable. I found ski poles, clothing, plastic bottles, cans and other winter items. There events where you can go volunteer your time to clean your local mountain or you can just go up on your own. Alta has an Annual Event To Clean Up Alta, Utah that you can attend. It’s great just being out in the mountains, especially when they are clean.

Picking up garbage or not littering is a good way to keep winter clean. We can do a lot more though. I’ve lived in places like London, England and Los Angeles, California where stores charge you to buy plastic bags. It wasn’t much but it has already cut the number of bags they’ve found on beaches in half. Bring your own reusable bags when you’re going out shopping. It makes my life easier when I only have a few grocery bags to bring in and a lot of stores give you a credit or discount when you bring your bags too. That makes it a win win. Sometimes it’s not possible but when you can take transit instead of driving. Cars cause a lot of pollution and if you live in a mountain city you probably deal with inversions and that air can be like smoking cigarettes! I know a lot about air pollution here in Utah because I was hired by the Division Of Air Quality DEQ to make a documentary on air pollution It’s Up To All Of Us. We can make a difference by using clean energy, installing solar panels, driving less, using reusable bags, not littering and joining protests that fight for climate. September 20-27, 2019 there were Climate Strikes Around The World to protest the actions a few greedy folks that impacts everyone. You can get involved and join organizations like On A Mission that are fighting for our climate. Snowboarding needs to have snow and over the last decade I’ve noticed that our winters are getting warmer. Polar ice caps are disappearing and places like India and islands are sinking due to the ocean levels rising. Climate is changing and we need to do something about. We can change things for the better and elect officials that will make a change.

How To Avoid Snowboard Blindside Crashes

I was riding at one of my favorite resorts Jackson Hole, Wyoming when this crash happened. Your blindside is where your back is facing and where we can’t see. You’ve got to be aware of your blindside to avoid other peeps out on the snow. I’m going to go over some snowboard safety tips to prevent crashes on the slopes. You want to keep your head on a swivel when your trail starts to merge into other trails. When all the trails funnel down to the lift the traffic increases and you need to be safe. I like to give myself a lot of room so I don’t have to worry about someone making a sudden turn and running into me. I ride a lot and I hit by Rogue Riders/Skiers almost every year. Someone out of control or not looking where they are going. I really look uphill a lot while I’m riding especially on my toeside edge because my body alignment is already facing that direction.

This is Responsibility Code #4 Look Uphill and will help you to avoid crashes. The person down hill of you has the right of way. I know it sucks when you’re flowing down the mountain making consistent turn shapes in good rhythm and then someone snakes your line. That can throw you out of wack and mess your line up but some folks don’t have proper mountain etiquette. Be aware of your blindside and other rogue skiers and snowboarders.

When you ride with snowboarders that are all goofy everyone has the same blindside but when you switch to a group with both regular and goofy riders then you have opposite blindsides. This crash was with a regular rider and myself a goofy ride. We were funneling out on to the main trail and we just didn’t see each other because of our blindside. I could have avoided this crash by slowing down because I did see him and we were merging into trails towards the bottom. I was keeping my speed to flow well and to carve. We both had that idea and we met when both of us were doing heelside cares. I was wearing a helmet and always recommend it to anyone on the mountain. The impact knocked my GoPro off but I kept my momentum and was up quickly. It could have been a bad crash but any crash you can get up from without injury is a good crash. 

Beware of Rogue Riders and Rogue Skiers when you snowboard. Keep your eyes up and look around you. We have blindsides and we need to use all our senses out there. Try to keep your riding in rhythm making similar turn shape size. When you are approaching the lift know that there will be out of control high speed maniacs. How To Pick the Right Size Snowboard

This online snowboard lesson will go over How To Pick the Right Size Snowboard. You want to have a snowboard that isn’t too tall or too short. This is a great time to get your snowboard. The new 2020 snowboards are out on the sales floor. There are a lot of factors you want to consider when picking a snowboard. There are different styles of snowboarding and riding types. I like to say that the best way to size your board is for it to between your chest to nose. Sometimes a snowboard that only goes to your chest is too small. There are times that a board to your nose is too small. The best way to size your snowboard is to use an algorithm that calculates your weight. When your weight increases the size of your snowboard increments in the same direction. The more you weight the bigger or longer your snowboard should be. When you snowboard you want to be able to float on the snow especially in powder conditions. If you don’t have enough surface area the snowboard will sink and floating or surfing the snow is something that makes snowboarding so cool. Ripping powder on the right size board is something you’ll never forget.

There are boards that have different levels of flex. Some snowboards have a different shape of sidecut. There are flex patterns or the camber shape of your snowboard from tip to tail. As a beginner you want soft flex with a twin tip shape or sidecut. The soft flex is more forgiving helping with balance. The twin tip will let you go in both directions symmetrically or goofy and regular the same way balanced. The camber should be flat or reversed camber to prevent hard edge changes or catching an edge. The board should be a little more smaller or shorter to help the beginner to maneuver the board easier that a longer snowboard. As you move up in your skills to intermediate to advanced you might want a longer, stiffer board with a directional sidecut. Depending on the style of your riding will be the type, length, shape & size of your snowboard.

I was up hiking today at Ata, Utah and the snow is amazing with powder conditions. I was on a wider board. It helps me to  be able to get a higher edge angle without booting out. Booting out is when your feet hang over you board. If you have larger feet thinner boards can cause boot out lifting your board off the snow and usually results in a crash. A wider snowboard also allows you to float in the snow with more surface area. The cons to a wide board is that it weighs more and it takes more time to switch from edge to edge. That makes me feel like I’m snowboarding a wee bit slower but it does prevent boot outs when I’m laying down huge carves on groomers. There are a lot of variables when you buying a snowboard but a good rule of thumb is between your chest and chin. I like to sometimes ride a snowboard up to my nose especially to deep powdery conditions. This video will help you keep your snowboard running fast How To Wax Your Snowboard.

Learn Snowboard Buttering Basics & Snowboard Tricks

This snowboard tutorial will go over Basic Buttering Techniques. Buttering is a cool trick to be able to do on your snowboard. It’s when you start balancing on just your nose or tail of you board. Think about applying butter on a piece of bread and that’s where the term buttering comes from. It’s easier to butter on snowboards that are softer in their flex pattern. Reverse camber or banana boards are built to butter. Find a flat area where your board isn’t moving and draw a line in the snow. Find a flat area where your board isn’t moving and draw a line in the snow. Find a flat area where your board isn’t moving and draw a line in the snow. After you’ve drawn the line in the snow you’re going to try to jump from left foot to right foot landing on that line. Use the board to absorb your landing. Instead of landing flat on your foot land on the nose and tail. Get the board to flex as your landing. This will bend the board and make it easier on your body. Think of jumping on a trampoline. The springs and matt flex and absorb your weight and then pop you back up. When you land flat on your foot your body absorbs the impact. Use your board to create pop and it will be easier on your body allowing you to snowboard longer.

The first thing you want to do is start leaning right and left foot forward making a 90º angle in that leg that you’re putting more weight on. The left leg and then right leg making a 90º angle. Then you’re going to start putting more weight lifting the board off the snow. Then get the nose and tail off the snow a little bit. Then you’re to start doing the drill jumping from left foot to right foot landing on that line. If you can’t see the line well use your glove. That will make a good line so I can see where I’m suppose to land. After you’re able to do that start moving around and lifting up. You’ll start to see that your board will start to spin a little bit. Keep your snowboard flat that’s a big key. Don’t keep it on it’s edge keep in really flat and don’t keep it on it’s edge. Keep your snowboard really flat. We’re going to start buttering on our snowboards.

Buttering is great for freestyle but it can also help you avoid obstacles on the snow like a rock. Lifting your board over an obstacle prevents you from damaging yourself and equipment. Learn To Snowboard & Get In Your Flow Zone Like Basketball & Baseball

This snowboard video will help you get More Dynamic in Your Snowboarding. What that means is I want to move a little bit more the whole time I’m riding. I have some drills where I talk about rhythm. Adding to dynamic riding by turning with rhythm. I want to build on that. Moving a bit having my knees, hips and ankles soft. That way when I’m out on the snow I can absorb any little variable that comes at you. Sometimes when you’re in a powder field there is a ice chunk or a rock or something else. Something that throws you off balance. If you’re able to absorb that you won’t crash. If you can bounce and be nice and soft in your body you’re able to absorb. We’re going to go out and just move. A good thing to do is to get some type of musicI really love riding to music I love doing a lot of things to music. It helps you just flow. That’s what Flowing Freeride is about, is rhythm and being in that state of flow. I know a lot of people talk about this in psychology. Time slows down, where athletes talk about being in the zone. That guy’s on fire! Basketball for example. These basketball players when they’re in the zone it’s like Stef Curry he shoots a 3 from almost half court because he’s on fire it just goes in. Swish nothing but net. That’s what I’m talking about.

When we’re out here snowboarding I want you to feel that flow and feel that rhythm. I want you brain to almost turn off. You’ve done it so much that you’re in that zone in that state of flow. We’re going out and bouncing to a rhythm. We’re going to get our either speaker or ear buds and listen to music. We’re going to put that into our ear, not both or a speaker. Some people don’t like doing that. I prefer ear buds. Riding to the beat the whole time that’s the drill. Ride to that rhythm and try to get into that state of flow. It’s just reaction. You can do anything. You’re really in rhythmIf you’re practicing at that state you get to be where a lot of these professional athletes are. Doing things so many times they’re in the zone. Baseball athletes are getting a baseball thrown to them at 100 mph and they’re able to hit that. It’s amazing! I’m talking about time kind of slowing down because they’re in that state of flow. This drill we’re going out listening to music as we’re riding bouncing to that beat and rhythm. So we’re in flow. Look at other videos on rhythm by clicking in the right corner. When you’re out riding with music make you sure you have one ear available. Take out one of your ear buds so you don’t have both in and can hear what’s going on around you. You don’t want to be deaf to the environment around here.

There are going to be people that come up on you, 2 inches away from you. I don’t know why they do it but you want to be aware of that. We’ve all had crazy things happen to us or we’ve had crazy people in our lives that cause stress. Find a healthy way of dealing with it and release that stress. I’ve been hiking Alta and snowbird the last few days. I met up with me mate Luke Shumacker and we were ripping the fresh powder getting face shots. It’s memorial weekend and there’s tons of snow to spray huge snow walls. Tip, dip and Rip the snow. Many resorts like Abasin, Breck, Mammoth and Snowbird have extended their seasons. Learn Snowboard Jibbing

This online snowboard lesson will go over Snowboarding Jibbing Tips. When you’re able to flow around the mountain you use everything out there as your playground. When you’re in the park there are man made features and jumps. There are similar features on the mountain that are natural. Train your eye to spot these treasures and jib them. When were out riding and we jump up and hit something it’s jibbing. You can use it as a verb to to jump off of something or to jump over an object. The object that you’re jumping over is jibbing it. Now as far as a drill what I like to do for jibbing is to go out and find as many things that I can jib off of, jump over use it as an actual a feature that I’ll jib off of. Maybe it’s a branch or I’ll be going up a quarter pipe and at the top I jump up and maybe twist and tweak my board to hit a branch or something. A lot of parks have a jump setup where there’s maybe a ball or some barrels something where you get the speed off it and then you actually bonk off of it jib off of it.

There are a few different phrases when you hit these objects but a good drill is to go out and find natural features outside the park. Maybe you find a little stick or logs whatever and try to jib off of them different ways. You can jib things with a flat board or your edge. Maybe you’re actually tweaking it and hit it with your board. Maybe you actually are going off a jump and you’re spinning one way and then you hit it and switch yourself back the opposite way. I’ve talked about some features outside of the park but the man-made features you might see a gong, big old bells, mail boxes and cars. You’ll even see urban rails with steps in there. You might see a lot of the metal objects and you’re like Wow! There are boxes and and all types of rails. These are great but I would recommend that you go out and first practice outside the park and as you feel a bit more comfortable gradually progressing in there.

One thing I really like about jibbing is once I get to my apex if there’s something I can jib off of and actually create more bounce. You’ll get a little bit further. It actually looks really cool and it makes you feel good. There are a lot of things you can do. It’s a fun little drill to go out and just jib over anything.
